The robot revolution is upon us, and it will transform our lives, businesses, and jobs for the better. At a time when technologists are digging ever deeper into the blossoming territory of robotics and artificial intelligence, Georgia Institute of Technology’s Professor Ayanna Howard, Ph.D., insists that with the right programming, robots and humanity can productively work together. In a recent Forbes piece, she reveals the opportunities, as well as challenges, of robotics in business, healthcare, education and the future of work.
The first generation of robots was concentrated primarily in manufacturing, but nearly every other industry is now being impacted, says Dr. Howard. “Robotics is going to reshape the economic landscape… Some companies are already starting to think about that, but we need to be more deliberative about it.” From health care (Dr. Howard is herself developing humanoid robots that provide physical therapy for children with motor skill limitations) to finance (companies are increasingly looking to AI to predict market trends and craft investment strategies), we will see more and more of our robot friends working alongside us.
To those who argue that humanity is taking a dangerous leap into the dark with robot tech, Dr. Howard says, “I understand those fears. We roboticists don’t talk enough about it. Like with any technology, there’s a negative aspect. But if we do robotics right, the good will outweigh the bad. Robotics will empower people to accomplish other great things in work and life without requiring them to be robot experts.” Companies that integrate robotics into their long-term business strategies will benefit immensely during the coming shift in our economy and way of life.
